5.8 Level of GAP implementation and effect on stillbirth rates

Recent, analysis of unit level ONS data for England pre-and post GAP implementation has shown that

  • there has been an overall reduction in stillbirths in the last ten years, likely to be associated with an increased level of awareness of avoidability of many stillbirth, their association with fetal growth restriction, and guidelines.
  • GAP units had a significantly greater decline in stillbirth rates, especially in units which had a more complete implementation, with extensive training, audit and adherence to protocols.
  • The greatest reduction has been observed in the subgroup of units with highest detection rates.
