5.3 Monitoring the effect of implementation

  • Monitoring SGA detection is an integral part of GAP and starts with establishing a  unit’s detection rate before implementation, which can be used as a baseline.
  • The metric is defined as the proportion of babies born SGA that have had one or more scans with an estimated fetal weight (EFW)  <10th customised centile.
  • A further metric is the false positive rate (i.e. where SGA was diagnosed antenatally but the newborn was not SGA).
  • GAP also produces data on the ‘top ten’ units, to show what detection rates are achievable, together with the respective false positive rates. Unit surveys have found that better performance is proportional to the level of local training and implementation of the programme
  • Maternity units can monitor their own performance and benchmark against national averages.
