2.10 Serial standardised fundal height measurements

  • SFH measurements are not meant to predict fetal weight. Their main value is to assess the growth rate, the slope of the curve, and compare it with the growth curves / trajectories predicted on the customised chart
  • This is the main reason for seeking to reduce intra-observer error (by standardised measurement) and inter-observer error (by measurements by same care provider) where possible, and by all care providers being trained to the same standard.   
  • Measurements should be carried out 2-3 weekly from 26-28 weeks up to delivery and plotted on the chart. 
  • Each measurement should be done once (i.e. no need to repeat and take averages). 
  • If a referral for scan is required on the basis of a fundal height measurement, another clinician should not re-measure as it may lead to false reassurance.
