5.3 Definitions for reporting

  • Denominator:  All babies with a birthweight below the 10th customised centile
  • Antenatal referral for suspected SGA/FGR:  Fundal height measurement has identified a concern and a referral has been made for ultrasound/Doppler
  • Antenatal detection of SGA: Growth problem has been identified on the basis of ultrasound scan for EFW below 10th customised centile
  • NB We can only monitor and report detection rates of SGA, not FGR, as there is no gold standard definition for newborn FGR. However many babies are at risk due to slow growth without being SGA, and antenatal surveillance needs to seek to detect them as well.
  • Hence the emphasis on longitudinal assessment of growth (by serial fundal height or scan EFWs, as indicated), rather than just ‘spot checks’ by one-off fundal height or fetal weight measurements.
